1. How Base64 Mathematical Encoding Works

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding algorithm designed to safely transmit binary data across media designed strictly for text, such as email (SMTP) and HTTP JSON APIs.

The algorithm takes 24 bits of input data (3 bytes of 8 bits each) and splits them into 4 chunks of 6 bits each. Each 6-bit value (0 to 63) maps directly to a character in the Base64 alphabet: A-Z (0-25), a-z (26-51), 0-9 (52-61), + (62), and / (63).

Because 3 bytes become 4 characters, Base64 introduces a predictable 33% data size overhead.

Base64 strings are always ~33% larger in byte size than the original binary input. For a 1 MB image, the Base64 Data URI string will be ~1.33 MB.

2. Standard Base64 vs URL-Safe Base64 (RFC 4648)

Standard Base64 utilizes the plus (+) and slash (/) characters. When placed in URL query parameters or REST path endpoints, slashes cause route resolution conflicts and plus signs are frequently transformed into spaces by form decoders.

Base64URL (RFC 4648 Section 5) resolves this by substituting + with - (hyphen) and / with _ (underscore), while stripping trailing = padding characters. Base64URL is the foundational encoding used in JSON Web Tokens (JWT) and OAuth state tokens.

3. Data URIs: When to Inline Images (and When Not To)

Base64 Data URIs (`data:image/png;base64,...`) allow developers to embed icons and logos directly into HTML `<img>` tags or CSS `background-image` declarations, eliminating a separate round-trip HTTP request.

• When to use Data URIs: Small UI icons (< 4 KB), critical above-the-fold SVG badges, and HTML email templates where external assets may be blocked. • When to avoid Data URIs: Large photos (> 20 KB), repeated images across multiple pages, or images that benefit from browser HTTP disk caching.

4. Security Truth: Encoding is Not Encryption

A pervasive security misunderstanding among junior engineers is confusing encoding with cryptographic encryption. Base64 provides zero confidentiality; any user or interceptor can decode the data in milliseconds without a secret key.

Never store sensitive passwords, API secrets, or credit card numbers in Base64 format without applying authenticated symmetric encryption (like AES-256-GCM) first.

5. Multibyte UTF-8 & Emoji Encoding in JavaScript

The legacy browser functions `btoa()` (binary to ASCII) and `atob()` (ASCII to binary) fail on Unicode characters and emojis outside the Latin1 range (U+0000 to U+00FF), throwing an `InvalidCharacterError`.
